About this Division

Division Commissioner: Becci Barnett

2 Rainbow, 4 Brownie, 2 Guide and 1 Senior Section (Rangers) Units

Our current Commissioner is Becci Barnett, who took the baton from Sara Layfield-Carroll in 2013. Becci can be contacted at beccib21@gmail.com or on 01325 311204. Becci was a Brownie then a Guide, but only returned to Guiding in 2010 so feels she still has a lot to learn.

We are a small Division of 9 Units; 2 Rainbows, 4 Brownies, 2 Guides and our Senior Section. Consequently our Division Team is tiny: Commissioner, Treasurer and Agency Manager. However, we have a good bunch of strong Unit Leaders who, with their assistants and supporters, work well together to provide Unit Guiding, Division events and wider opportunities to our 150 members.

Over the past few years we have been very grateful to Honest John (local community fundraiser) and Great Aycliffe and Middridge Area Action Partnership (GAMP) for significant contributions to our funds. Honest John funding is usually used within units to support Unit activities and outings including holidays and camps. In 2014, GAMP supported the Division to involve most of our Brownies in the Big Brownie Birthday Sleepovers at Mowden Rugby Club and most of our members, of all ages, in Star Quest Spectacular at Wetherby Racecourse.

For 2015 we have secured a further grant from GAMP which will be used by the Division to support members taking part in activities beyond our Division boundaries. Our goal is to send girls to NEE Brownie Camps, ICE, SS and Guide walking weekends and Baden Powell Adventures.

In previous years we have been involved in a variety of ways in the Great Aycliffe Show (hosted in August by Great Aycliffe Town Council), however, 2014 saw the last ever GAShow. We are currently exploring ways to be involved in the Show’s successor: Great Aycliffe Festival; the inaugural Festival being planned for July 2015.

Every year we get together as a Division to celebrate Thinking Day and with the people of Great Aycliffe to mark Remembrance Sunday. Most of our units attend the Town Council’s annual Remembrance procession and our presence is highly valued.

Here are a few of the things we have done together over the past few years:

2012

Olympic Torch: As a town and Division, we were very proud to send one of our number to the London Paralympics as a Games Maker. In preparation we all turned out to cheer the Torch Bearers on the national tour. Many of our Units took part in the "On Your Marks" Olympic challenge and welcomed local Torch Bearers into our Units.

2013

Disney on Ice: 89 Rainbows, Brownies and Guides travelled together by coach to Newcastle Metro Radio Arena for this fantastic ice dance show. This was the biggest adventure we had organised as a Division for quite some time.

2014

Star Quest Spectacular: 8 Units (109 members) took part in the NEE Region event at Wetherby Racecourse. Thanks to grant funding from GAMP, the buses were paid for and the tickets were all discounted.

Big Brownie Birthday Stay Away: Over the two weekends 61 girls with 13 leaders attended the Durham South County events at Mowden Rugby Club. While there we were able to celebrate together Gemma’s completion of her ALQ for Rainbows. She is now working on Brownies Module One.
