Over thirty Rainbows from Barnard Castle, Middleton in Teesdale and Staindrop took part in an activity day based on first aid on Saturday 21st January at the Guide Headquarters in Barnard Castle.

We have practiced how to tell if someone is not breathing - Libby, 6

The girls were taught basic first aid skills by Girlguiding First Aid Instructor, Lynn Wheldon. These included how to check consciousness and breathing and how to put a casualty into the recovery position. The girls also learnt how to clean a minor wound, apply a dressing and deal with a burn. During a different workshop they were taught about the work of the ambulance service and when and how to call an ambulance.

It is comforting to know that should any of the girls find themselves in an emergency situtaion that they have the basic skills and knowledge - Judy, Leader and event organiser

In addition to the first aid and emergency situation workshops the girls enjoyed treating the patients in the Teddy Bears Hospital, practicing their bandaging techniques on each other, baking and making a first aid kit.

At the end of the day, the girls who are all aged between five and seven were presented with a badge by Unit Leader and event organiser Judy Freeman. Said Judy after the event, “We have had a fun filled and very worthwhile day, it is comforting to know that should any of the girls find themselves in an emergency situation that they have the basic skills and knowledge to give immediate help and raise the alarm”. Libby, 6, said “I have had lots of fun today and now know what to do in an emergency. We have practiced how to tell if someone is not breathing.”
